Strappe > Back down to Forest Road 97. It's still paved, anyway.

It's after 5:30 now and I haven't seen a car for nearly two hours. Time to head west to civilization.

I turned down Forest Service Road 49 towards Bartle on Hwy. 89. Road 49 was pretty spooky - twilight, volcanic rock amidst the pines, straignt as a string for miles.

I was afraid to ride much over 60 mph, though - this is exactly the time and place where I'd expect deer to jump into the road.

I carried on to Dunsmuir on I-5, then on to Redding for the night.

Tired! Some fairly tough riding, 11-1/2 hours total time.

More to come: the next day is the Trinity Alps.

After a good night's sleep I creaked back onto the SV and headed west on Hwy. 299 to Weaverville for breakfast, then north on Highway 3 through the Trinity Alps:

Strappe > Highway 3 is unbelievably beautiful. Good roads, no traffic, everything I love in a ride.

Stopped for a break at Trinity Lake:

Strappe > All alone, far from civilization.

Strappe > Well, maybe not. One day I'll check this place out. Sounds promising.

Strappe > Another rest stop on the way up to the Scott Mountain summit, 5401 feet:

Strappe > While I was shooting pics at the waterfall a pair of Harleys went past. Once I got back on the SV it didn't take long to catch 'em. :D

Over the summit and down to Callahan, then I continued on to Etna for gas.

The couple (husband and wife) on the Harleys pulled into the gas station. They were headed into Oregon. The guy pointed out that his wife had parked in a handicapped zone. She said, "I am handicapped! I'm riding a Harley!

Strappe > From Etna I usually go over the montain via Sawyers Bar Road, but this time I wanted to explore Cecilville Road.

Back down Hwy. 3 to Callahan, then west on Cecilville Road. A nice ride on excellent pavement up to the summit, then I coasted for the next 12 miles.

Strappe > After the hamlet of Cecilville (there's a saloon, but I didn't stop) the road turns more goat-trailish.
